Sunday, October 27th

October has been a beautiful month. We have had fall weather in Vegas, and it has been oh so lovely. It’s typically pretty warm up until Halloween, but we’ve had some chilly days and really nice days as well. Good weather makes me very happy. It is magical almost. Magical enough to write about on the blog. I love the feeling in the air when the season changes from summer to fall.

Just this past week we were able to go up to St. George and stay at Amanda’s house (Amanda’s the best) with Bec and Jud and our kiddos. We spent a day up at Zion National Park, and all I want to do is go back there. It was a perfect fall day, and it was wonderfully enjoyable to be out in God’s green earth. The colors of the leaves were changing. We saw deer grazing in fields, and the children got to feed squirrels. It was such a nice time and a much needed short vacation from our daily routine. Our second night’s stay was an eventful one, with Teagan throwing up in his sleep all over himself and Sadie, and Logan waking up at 12:30 am and staying awake until 7 am. I nearly lost my mind that night until he finally plopped on the floor in the living room after running around like a wild man all night. He’s lucky, super lucky, that I really love him. We still had a great time despite our lack of sleep the second night. (Photos courtesy of my new iPhone 5c)

We went to our ward trunk-or-treat on Friday night after getting back from St. George. The boys’ best buds, Tahj and Leyah, and G-Ma and G-Pa Edgel came with us for the night. Logan was Chewbacca, Easton was Harry Potter, and Teagan was a knight. If you ask Teagan, he’ll tell you that he was “the dark” for Halloween. He apparently forgot the word “knight” today, and I’m assuming he thought he was a “night”, so he said he was “the dark.” Kids are too cute. I should work more often with him on saying his R’s, but I just can’t let that little part of his baby-ness go.

The Children had so much fun at the pumpkin patch a week ago with Sadie and Jayden. We went with Bec and Jud and my parents last Friday, and the children spent the evening riding on all the janky carnival rides and playing in the bouncy things. We actually went to one that was a bit more affordable than the one we went to last year. We got the boys wrist bands that allowed them to ride everything as many times as they wanted. The one we went to last year didn’t have that option. Logan got to ride everything with Jacob, and he had WAY too much fun. I love to see him do all these things like his big brothers for the first time. Having children makes life so much more fun!! I tried to get pics, but there was too much going on and the children were running around 100 miles per hour.

We carved pumpkins and ate yummy roasted pumpkin seeds for FHE last Monday at G-Ma and G-Pa Edgel’s. As I said, October has been great. We’ve had a couple fires at the Edgels, one of which was tonight after dinner at my parents’ since Jen and Jared are in town with Gavin. I don’t know if my children love anything more than being with cousins. I love that they love it. Teagan and Sadie are inseparable, and even though Easton is older than everyone, he seems to be equally enthused to have cousin hangouts. It is so important to me for my children to be close to their cousins, and I love to see them being buds.

October has also been great because I’ve made about 4 too many trips to Target. Shhh. A few last pics of my boys.

Wednesday, October 16th

Well, here I am. I’m up late editing family pictures, and it occurred to me that I should update my poor little blog. Life has been wonderful. Vegas has been having beautiful fall days for a few weeks now, and beautiful weather has a way of making me happy. I’ve been walking the kids to school to get exercise and also just be in the lovely outdoors. The boys love our morning walks, particularly my little Logan who would spend all of his wakeful hours outside (si, as he calls it) if he could. He runs like a crazy person to the door if you say outside or walk. I love it. What I don’t love is how big he keeps getting. I don’t remember him as a baby anymore, the same way I don’t remember my children at any age except for their current age. I hate that about time – it seems to pass and take with it all my memories. If it weren’t for videos and pictures, I would never believe that my children were ever babies. It’s such a small part of their lives, and I feel so sad about that. Each year is one year that I’ll never get back again. It’s such a mean trick to play on moms.

Jacob’s job at Apple is perfect for him, and he loves it. I love that he is happy with a job. I love that it brings in money and provides for our needs and makes for a happy husband. I don’t like his new schedule that he starts this Saturday, working Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 5 am- 4 pm. He gets a new schedule every 3 months, but we are not in the least bit crazy about him working on Sundays, and we’re hoping and praying that somehow that will change so that we can all go to church together. The boys are praying for it, and they are so cute when they pray, so it has to happen.

I am booked every weekend for pictures until December. I don’t mind having a busy time, as long as I’m not doing all freebies. I’m a terrible business person – I couldn’t sell $10 for $1. I give too many deals to people that I know because I feel bad to charge people that I’m friends with. But I’m a friendly person, so I can’t give everyone deals or I’d make no money.

I hate to be so short, but it’s late and I have to be up early, so I’ll have to catch up another night a couple months from now. At least, that’s usually how it goes :/.

Sunday, September 8th

August was a loooooong month.  As I anticipated I would, I spent weeks 5-10 of my pregnancy sick and nauseous, but 3-4 of those weeks were much more brutal than I would have ever imagined. I was sick with Logan, but this time I was too sick to stand up or sit up or eat or get dressed or brush my hair or put on my makeup or take care of my family. It was a blessing in disguise that Jacob was out of a job so that he could do my job. Aside from having morning sickness all day long, I got a UTI that crawled up out of hell and into my body, and I swear it nearly killed me. I ended up in the emergency room with it because I was in more pain than I have ever been in in my life every time I had to urinate. It was excruciating. I would sit in the bathroom and shake and cry, and it was far worse than any natural labor I’ve ever been in. I was sent home from the ER without any treatment for the pain, and I didn’t find out until 4 days later that I had a UTI when my CNM Charlene called me and said they got the report back from the ER saying that I had a UTI. So I went a week experiencing the most horrific pain I’ve ever been in all because of a UTI. I had no idea a urinary tract infection could be so brutal. I nearly lost my mind. That week was the worst. My nausea just got worse after that week was over, and then at my 10 week ultrasound (8-30), little baby had no heartbeat. I was disappointed, but I wasn’t distraught. Annoyed that I had spent so much time sick for nothing, wondering how I could still feel so sick if baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks 6 days. But I understand that miscarriages happen all the time. I had one before Easton too, though I was only 6 weeks along then. I didn’t expect this one since I was sick and hadn’t had any cramping or bleeding. We set up a D&C for the following Thursday instead of letting my body miscarry on its own because there was no way to be sure when my body would do that, and I was still so sick and would probably continue to be sick until I got the baby out of me. So I had the D&C on Thursday, Sept 5th, and by that evening I already felt like a million bucks. No more nausea, no more exhaustion, no more feeling like death. It was fabulous, and I have spent the past 3 days reveling in the glory of feeling well. I’ve wandered aimlessly around Target buying things we don’t need. I played in the rain with my children. I took the boys out to the Farmer’s Market at Tivoli Village yesterday where we browsed all the booths, played at the playground, and got their faces painted. Then we went to lunch and out for frozen yogurt. It has been so wonderful to feel normal again and to be able to go places and get out of my house. We were supposed to do so many fun things in August and didn’t get to do any of it since I just lay on the couch being a waste of space the entire month. Thank goodness it is over! It was a horrible pregnancy. I definitely want another baby, but I just don’t know when anymore, and we’ll trust in the Lord’s timing on that matter. I am disappointed that Staci and I aren’t pregnant together anymore. We were just a month apart! She is due in February with a little boy, and I am so excited for her! It would have been fun to have our babies so close together. And I could have been 12 weeks pregnant this week, just about in the clear and over the bad part. Otherwise, I’m okay, we’re okay, and it isn’t the end of the world.

For the good news – Jacob got a job!!!! Actually, he got two. This month we would have depleted our savings, so we were kind of down to the last straw. Tender mercies, that’s all I can say. Jacob applied for a working from home job with Apple back in June, and we hadn’t heard anything back. There were a bunch of other jobs we were sure we wanted that fell through, and then on Monday he got the call letting him know that we was hired and will start on September 16th. He also got a temporary job for this month doing contract work for the school district here, and he started that one on Monday. He’ll be working there until the 16th. This new job with Apple is the answer to 3 1/2 years of praying for a good job that would provide sufficiently for our family. It’s better pay than he’s ever made and has benefits, which we’ve never had. I almost feel bad that he got this job, like it’s too good for us, too tender a mercy, and somehow I feel like we don’t deserve it or that it can’t possibly be happening since we’ve been praying for it since we got married. I tend to feel that we need to be suffering in some way or we won’t be growing or that God has to always tells us no to what we want because we need to learn something from it. We’ve had a rough few months with Jacob being unemployed, me being so sick, and then losing the baby that Jacob getting a job and me feeling better feel like the floodgates have opened and the blessings of heaven have been poured down upon us. It’s kind of a good feeling. It’s a lesson to us to trust in the Lord’s ways and in His timing. It’s a witness that prayers are answered in the ways they need to be and not how or when we think they should be. I have to learn over and over again that the Lord knows what He’s doing in my life. I have to learn to trust Him with every new trial that comes because each time I seem to forget that just like all the other times, He also knows what’s best this time. I forget every single time that I’m really not that smart or as all-knowing as I assume I am. Anyway, a lot of learning has happened in our home these past few months. Jacob gave me a blessing when I was really sick during the pregnancy and told me that it would be a difficult pregnancy. And it was. Juddy also gave me blessing assuring me that the Lord would give me strength to bear the pain that I was in. And He did. We’ve wondered how we would make it every year when our income didn’t measure up to our expenses, and looking back, I see that every year we somehow made it. And we don’t even have any debt. I felt like our prayers about getting a good job were lost somewhere in the heavens, and they were answered. Heavenly Father was listening. I was worried when Jacob didn’t have a job this summer, and as it turns out, I really needed him home with me. What a blessing that we were able to sell our house in January and pay off our car and debt and put money into our savings for a time like this summer when Jacob would be out of a job. And when that money was just about out, Jacob got a good job. I think of all these things, how perfectly they all work together, and I am ever so certain that the Lord is in the details of our lives.

Easton started second grade on the 26th of August. What a handsome young boy he is. And what an amazing 7-year-old! He was the biggest help in all my weeks of sickness. So many mornings he gets Logan out of his crib, changes his diaper, feeds him, and entertains him until Jacob or I come downstairs an hour or so later. I’m used to him doing this, and I forget how amazing it is that my 7-year-old boy does this on his own without being asked. He sees that there is a need and understands that his parents are tired and takes the initiative to help out. He is an exceptional boy. I am amazed that he can be so intuitive, so responsible, and so compassionate. He’s a normal child, of course, that fights with and teases his brother, but there is just so much goodness and an astounding amount of wisdom oozing out of this boy. He must have an old soul.  Anyway, he really likes his teacher and really likes school. And I really like him. Poor guy has been throwing up all day today, so I don’t know if he’ll be going to school tomorrow. Hopefully the other boys don’t get sick!

Friday, August 2nd Disappointment

I’m not sure how July went by without a single blog post. We haven’t been unusually busy. Time just gets away from me, and with nothing to show for it. We’ve spent some days at Wet N Wild. We celebrated 4th of July. We were supposed to go to Idaho the last week of July, but Jacob’s lack of employment has left us pinching every penny. School starts in just 3 1/2 short weeks, and I don’t feel like we’ve done anything grand this summer. Jacob will also begin classes again, so I won’t be going to school while he goes because there’s only two of us. With three children plus one on the way, it just doesn’t work to both be in school, not for us. Plus, I’ll likely be of no use for the next 3 months if this goes anything like my last one (keep this under wraps – I’m not announcing it yet).

No matter where we seem to turn in looking for jobs for Jacob, we keep running into walls, and nothing pans out. It is extremely disappointing to constantly feel like there is a good opportunity on the horizon, and then nothing comes of it. He’s had so many things just turn into disappointment, and at the end of the day it leaves us asking what else we’re supposed to be doing or what we’re supposed to be learning from all this. He’s in school. He’s learning. He’s applying for jobs day in and day out. We think we’ve got leads, and they lead us nowhere. We’re doing our best, but it’s hard to not feel like it’s hopeless when attempt after attempt just result in failure.

I’m not big on money. I don’t dream of fancy cars or fancy houses. I don’t care if we ever own a boat or a vacation home or go on exotic family vacations. I don’t care if I ever only shop on clearance. I don’t care if I can afford to take my entire family out to a nice restaurant for dinner. I am happy without all of those things because I know for certain that money only buys things and not happiness. But my life is good, and we are happy, and I only want money sufficient to provide for our needs. That’s all. And our needs are very humble. We have no car payments or debt at all. We just pay rent and utilities. So we don’t need much, but we do need something. I’m not asking for the big bucks. As a matter of fact, we’re only asking for what someone else might consider just barely above poverty, but we’re really fortunate to have such low expenses. So it’s frustrating to pay your tithing and fast offerings and wait for the financial floodgates to open, and there’s not even a trickle. Makes me think that half of those blessings really are spiritual which is great in the long term, but today we have to pay our rent. Today we have to feed our family. Today we have needs to meet. I just feel disappointment, and I’m very uncomfortable with disappointment. I think it’s an awful feeling that leaves my stomach in knots. I don’t like to feel disappointed or let down.

But we are happy. We have such a happy little family. I hear all the time that financial problems lead to divorce, and I feel grateful that all it does for Jacob and me is make us closer and more willing to lean on each other for support. We feel disappointed together instead of alone. We bear the burden together. I don’t mean to paint some unrealistic picture of bliss and and romance because we are certainly two normal human beings married to each other, but I always love my husband even if I don’t like him every minute of every day. He’s a good partner.

Anyway, catch up – 4th of July we spent swimming at Colleen’s and then at a neighborhood potluck on my parents’ street. It was sweltering outside. I can’t remember it ever being that hot on other 4th of July’s but maybe it’s always that hot.  Jacob’s parents also joined us for some of the day.

I had a much needed girls’ night with Andrea, Staci, and Becca in July, and Staci told us some good news. We went to dinner and then Serendipity for dessert, but we got caught in a nice storm so that’s why my hair looks crazy.
